Four new world records in the 10 meter air pistol competitions: Ukraine and India dominate
After a thrilling opening ceremony, the first competitions in the 10-meter air pistol discipline started today - a start that made the fans' hearts beat faster. The battle for the men's final places broke out in the morning, with every shot deciding between victory and defeat. The tension was palpable as the shooters duelled in the qualifying round to secure one of the coveted places among the top eight.
At the end of the qualification, Ukraine triumphed and sent three of its best shooters to the final. India followed closely behind with two strong participants. Croatia, the United Arab Emirates and Taiwan also each secured a place in the final.
For the German shooters, however, the day was disappointing: despite the efforts of Martin Böhlke (538 rings), Bodo Funcke (535 rings) and Thomas Münchenbach (526 rings), the results fell short of expectations and they failed to make it into the final.
In the final, the shooters put everything on the line. The Ukrainian Oleksii Lazebnyk showed nerves of steel and secured the gold medal with an outstanding 237 rings, which was set as a new world record. The Indian Abhinav Deshwal also proved his skills and won the silver medal with 233.9 rings. Bronze went to his compatriot Shubham Vashist, who completed the podium with 214.0 rings.
Ukraine also dominated the team ranking impressively, taking first place with 1677 rings. India followed in second place with 1633 rings, while Germany secured third place in the team ranking with 1599 rings despite missing out on individual finals. Ukraine also set a new world record in the team ranking.
But the day was not over yet. The women's shooters also fought for a place in the final. Unfortunately, German hope Silke Fischer was eliminated in the qualifying round. In this round, Indian Pranjali Dhumal set a world record by scoring 568 out of a possible 600 rings. In the thrilling final, Indian Anuya Prasad beat Ukrainian Sofiia Olenych by a razor-thin margin of just 0.1 rings to win gold, setting a new world record with 232.0 rings. Olenych had to settle for silver, while her teammate Halyna Mosina rounded off the excellent Ukrainian result with bronze.
Today a total of four new world records were set, making the competition a historic event.
The focus now turns to tomorrow, when the competitions in the 10 meter air rifle discipline will resume. The shooters are ready to give their all again to secure glory and honor.
